Of the above, the only one I am not psyched about is the eggplant. But even though I detest eggplant as a food, they really are gorgeous objects, especially when they are still on the vine, all black-purple and glowing. There will certainly be some beautiful photographs to result from them in our garden, as well as several dishes that I will not touch. (More for Adam.)

The entire set on the left is onions, and the one on the right contains tomatoes, basil, and eggplant. I'll start the arugula outside.

Supposedly this entire seed starting kit is biodegradable - made from various stuff that can be composted. Even the plasticky covers you see are made from a vegetable oil. If it's true, I think it's a great thing. Well, Adam was right, I did decide to dig it up out of the ground (where it was thriving TOO MUCH), and we put it in a really large pot that I got last fall for this purpose. This blackberry needs room for its roots to do well, but I didn't want it to do so well that it takes over our back yard and the neighbors'. As it is, I am concerned that we left some roots in the ground, which may well survive to push up more branches. In which case my neighbor is going to sue my ass for infecting their yard with this sht.

It had managed to put down roots from some of its branches, and we broke off part of it and repotted that for Randy.

Some of our harvest so far...

Potato Harvest

We planted potatoes for the first time and had a great harvest! The potatoes you see are all the potatoes we've dug up to date, but the onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers are all from today. This year, we are doing pretty poorly with cucumbers, possibly because of planting them in the same spot as last year, or possibly because of not getting enough light due to the pear tree, which has really grown into a shade producer, or possibly because of all the rain we got in June & July. Who knows? Meanwhile, we're getting HUGE numbers of tomatoes, at which we pretty much failed in past years.

Onions were a new choice for us this year and they did not disappoint. Some were small, some were large, but they have a fantastic, slightly sweet, slightly peppery flavor. We fried some in oil (with no breading, damn you Atkins) and they were phenomenal! I wish I knew what breed they are, they were from Home Depot so I don't have much info on them. We're definitely doing them again next year.

We started tomatoes from seed, of course, but when I was worried that they would never mature sufficiently to be planted outside I went and got 2 plants from the nursery. Those are Rutgers tomatoes, which I thought I'd try in honor of Adam and Tracy's alma mater. They are okay, they do have a nice flavor, and are moderate in size, but they have a tendency to ripen only halfway up the fruit, and then start to rot. You have to use them pretty quickly after picking them; I've put some in the window to finish ripening and they went from not-quite-ripe to bad without stopping in the middle for eating. Too bad. Meanwhile, the other variety, the ones we planted as seed, have been starting to yield big softball sized fruit which have a wonderful, sweet flavor. They taste like you hope a tomato will taste when you bite into it or slice it up. We've been eating them with home grown basil and knots of mozzarella. Yum!

The potatoes are Swedish fingerling; they ALL grew from some renegades that I failed to find when harvesting the tiny crappy almost non-harvest of last year. This crop is only finger-sized if you are Shrek! They're good sized and look like they will taste great. We can't even try them yet. After the wedding, when we can ease back on the Atkins, we can try some and see. Basically we have to give most of them away, so post a comment or email us if you want a potful.

Finally, the little "chocolate cherry tomatoes" there are actually kind of gross. They are super sweet; they don't taste like chocolate, fortunately, but they still have a flavor I'm not crazy about. They have mostly overripened on the vine because I wasn't able to tell when they were ready; one that I picked today actually burst in my hand as I was just holding it (and it wasn't a nice feeling. It kind of felt like Invasion of the Body Snatchers). Anyway, that's an experimental choice that we won't repeat.

Some lovely flowers...

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; We're looking forward to reading about what all of you have been planting and how successful you were as well as sharing what we're up to.

We have the following planted this year:
Tomatoes (several varieties which I cannot name - because I can't remember!)
Some of these are growing upside down in an upside down tomato planter - with herbs on top
Potatoes (both white and blue - first year we've tried potatoes)
Cucumbers (had a lot of success with these last year and pickled quite a few, even made relish)
Zucchini (every year these seem to take over the garden, they are always huge - too much miracle grow?)
Peas (had a lot of luck with these last year)
Green Beans (also had a lot of luck with these last year but we only have a few this year, instead of a ton of plants like last year)
Peanuts (first year)
Lettuce (red and green - not sure the green variety name, I don't eat lettuce!)
Blueberries (3 different varieties, which I'm sure will all taste the same, 2 plants are new)
Raspberries (red and amber - first year for us)
Blackberries (also first year)
Strawberries (started them in a pot last year and they proceeded to sprawl on the ground near by and came back this year)
Pumpkins (orange and white varieties - we grew these once before at our old house and they took over the back yard)
3 Hazelnut trees (still very young and likely won't produce for years)
Fig Tree (we planted this last year and got a few figs out of it)
Cherry Tree (still very young and likely won't produce for years)
Pear Tree (still very young and likely won't produce for years - apparently produces several kinds of pears - some genetically engineered frankenpear tree or something)
Nectarine Tree (still very young and likely won't produce for years)

I think that's it, but I might have forgotten some things.

Of course we have a ton of flowers and crap too :)

Hopefully I'll get a chance to upload some photos soon.

Inviting two new survivors

As well all know, the slavering jaws of the unstoppable inexorable undead hordes draws ever nearer, and in that vein, Tom and his lovely wife Renee (as well as their unborn child, who though it makes Renee slower in the short term, it makes her that much fiercer in the battle to protect her progeny) are plannin' on joining our little grow-op. There are 1 or 2 okras that are possibly still hanging on, but probably they will die too. And all the cucumbers - dead. I think it was because of the fucking plastic mulch "paper" I got at Home Depot when I ran out of the actual paper stuff; the paper stuff is quite permeable, whereas the plastic, which claims to be, is not. I used this stuff around some of our plantings in year 0 and wherever I used it, it kept 95% fewer weeds from coming up than elsewhere. Apparently the plastic stuff keeps 100% of all things from growing wherever it is, because no water could get through.

So yesterday I went over to Ploch's and bought a bunch of seedlings of cucumbers, as well as 3 peppers, 1 oregano, 2 tomatoes ("Rutgers" varietal) and 3 arugula plants. We still have lots of seeds starting in our window, but I'm hedging our bets. And I also think it would be better to let the seedlings get a little more established before we put them in the ground. They seem kind of wimpy to stand up to the 90 degree weather we are having. (Apropos of which, WTF? It's, uh, APRIL!)

Also I took up the plastic mulch sheeting and put down more of the paper stuff that I got at Ploch's. Also, I moved the blackberry bush out of the pot it was being choked in, into the dirt where it will have a fighting chance between waterings, which we don't do often enough.

I got the worst of the crab grass out yesterday and discovered the brussels sprout plant, some leftover arugula, and about 30 small fingerling potatoes (in addition to the handful Adam found last week). I'm excited to eat the taters, which we are going to roast with salt & oil & rosemary tonight.

Our garden now looks kind of sad, with most of the plot emptied out and the spindly potatoes just barely hanging on.

Product review: ((Grade F)) The Melnor AquaTimer, which is a timer for turning on the water, so you can set up a sprinkler to run at 11pm. It eats 9V batteries despite claiming that one will last an entire season, and because it discharges them so quickly it doesn't run when it is supposed to. So I blame Melnor for the dead spots in our lawn and the near death of the blackberry and the crappy showing of the potatoes. Anything but taking responsibility for it onto ourselves. ;)

more!

Tomatoes:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_p77Bb0gUxSc/SJ34utniyOI/AAAAAAAAAC0/vGAOhPHrJGQ/s320/IMG_1047.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232611823477508322" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_p77Bb0gUxSc/SJ343kFQU4I/AAAAAAAAAC8/tE4-SgGR09s/s320/IMG_1048.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232611975536595842" />

Corn!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_p77Bb0gUxSc/SJ34-jUoJgI/AAAAAAAAADE/ZW9f9xB-4VQ/s320/IMG_1053.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232612095591720450" />

Bounty!

We've been sweating, and being eaten alive getting the garden weeded and the tomatoes propped up... The potatoes haven't sprouted yet so I just sent an email to Burpee asking them WTF. Also, our peppers have been extremely slow to sprout seedlings, so I didn't put the peat pots in the ground yet but I did leave them outside. Sprout or wither, seedlings.

I'm feeling harshed because we killed some chicks in their eggs when cleaning out a bird's nest that was in our eave. We both pulled out big sections of the nest. I saw the eggs first, a whole one and then a half shell, and then Adam pointed out the unhatched chick next to it, and then I nudged it and it squirmed and I realized it was still alive and I just lost it. I didn't like that I was the cause of this little being's death. I knew it was an active bird's nest and I didn't do anything to protect it or stop Adam from pulling it out and I pulled out some too. I thought it was too early for eggs and that the birds were still just getting ready. Anyway, it was a really awful feeling.

Pictures from the Grim Meathook Future; Also: a restatement of purpose

The Livejournal newsgathering community So Very Doomed has long been an excellent way to track the Grim Meathook Future, and this morning they have a collection of recent news stories relating to Food Doom:

The World Food Programme said yesterday that it has begun to cut the provision of school meals to some of the world’s poorest children as the global crisis over food prices worsens…

Interesting article on the hint of food rationing in America:

Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.

At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy. “Where’s the rice?” an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. “You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous.”

The bustling store in the heart of Silicon Valley usually sells four or five varieties of rice to a clientele largely of Asian immigrants, but only about half a pallet of Indian-grown Basmati rice was left in stock. Or at least tonight, as I did a lot of de-rock-ifying the soil today, and planted the lettuce.

Adam used the new tiller on almost all of the area that needed tilling. It helped a lot, but ran out of juice. So we joined everybody else on the planet at Home Depot and got a second battery.

Adam did not till the area where I was going to plant mesclun today so he failed.

Here is the sketch of our back yard that we are working from. You have Martha, again, to thank for this as she inspired me with aerial photos of her (much larger) garden with carefully plotted layout. Click on it to see a larger version.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_raBp5WfwyHI/SAqNuaTotmI/AAAAAAAAASg/RpNdBm_mWSo/s320/garden_2008.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191117348973098594" />

The green areas are the ones we have now planted.

I want artichokes, although it's late to be thinking of it. Is anybody else already doing them? I have a little extra room on the side of the house.

Oh, also, I moved the hostas (sp?) from the side of the house where they were in the way to under the apple tree, which by the way is starting to bloom. I will have to break out the fox urine decoys soon. If you don't know about this and want to control squirrels, the plant store told me this is a good method. The kit comes with 3 little aerated bottles that contain the fox urine and you hang them on the tree, which is supposed to make the squirrels believe they are in fox territory. We'll see if it works and I'll post the results.

Now to prep the yard...

If it just wasn't so damn chilly this week...

Zombies, eat yer hearts out!

OK! They will probably end up tearing up the whole space because they're also going to replace the rotting rail road ties that support the fence with some stone or brick or something more sturdy. I am guessing in the process we can expect all the dirt to get turned over as well. Maybe that would be a good time to rent a tiller.

We got a copy of the Burpee catalog too and went through dog-earing lots of pages. It's never too early (as we demonstrated on New Year's Eve) to get excited.

* Cucumbers
* Onions
* Garlic
* Sweet peppers
* Hot peppers (only a soupcon as a little goes a long way)
* One tomato plant
* "Patty-pan" squash

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_raBp5WfwyHI/R4JenSs1HgI/AAAAAAAAAGo/qwSBVSTuEfg/s400/patty-pan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152784952793046530" />

First Post!

Woot.
